Professor Mark Gillott and Dr Lucelia Rodrigues, together with researchers from the Power Electronics, Machines and Control Group have been awarded a grant worth over €1m as part of a €15m project by the European Horizon 2020 programme.
Led by Siemens in Germany, the project titled Storage Enabled Sustainable Energy for Buildings and Communities (SENSIBLE) aims to address the issues surrounding energy storage, both thermal and electrical, in homes and communities.
The University’s team will work closely with the local Meadows community, one of our TURAS case studies, in order to integrate energy storage solutions with the specific focus being on the socio-economic benefits that can be gained. This work will follow up on the first TURAS findings and the investment in infrastructure will allow for further investigation on the barriers and opportunities to increasing social resilience through community based energy schemes.
The Meadows is an area located on the south side of Nottingham close to the River Trent. It was originally a large area of wetland/floodplain that was drained and gradually developed for a variety of uses, incorporating terraced housing, public houses, factories, warehouses and public buildings such as libraries and swimming baths. The Meadows is mostly residential and is well situated for access to the town, the rail station, nearby green spaces and the river.
The knowledge gained can be transferrable to other schemes such as the Trent Basin project. The team is currently seeking funding to develop a similar scheme in the Trent Basin, another TURAS demonstration sites.
